Metro Shares Plans for High School Property

Metro Development Company, the developer purchasing the Souderton Area High School property, shared its conceptual vision for the redevelopment of the land at the November 10 Borough Council meeting. The plan for the land in Souderton includes:

  • 35,000 square feet of office space,
  • 10,000 square feet of recreational space,
  • 10,000 square feet of restaurant space,
  • 81,000 square feet of retail space, and
  • 32 residential units.

The majority of the units planned will be townhouses on the west side of School Lane. The natatorium, which contains the swimming pool, may be saved for inclusion in a fitness center, but the rest of the high school will most likely be demolished. A rendering of the plan is available for public review during regular business hours at the Souderton Borough Office.

Further Discussion at Upcoming Meeting

Borough Council will discuss the conceptual plans at an administrative work session on Monday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Souderton Municipal Building. Borough Council is anticipated to formally indicate whether they are in agreement with Metro’s development strategy at the next regular meeting on Monday, December 1. Participation and input from residents are welcome.

In October, the Souderton Area School District approved an agreement to sell the site of the Souderton Area High School to Philadelphia-based Metro Development Co. The $11 million purchase price will go toward the service of debt on the new high school in Franconia Township and needed improvements to other district schools. Metro Development Company will not take possession of the property until the new school opens in September 2009.
